    Taste and Occasion

Walking through the supermarket shelves, you get the feeling that vegetable chips are the new potato chips. Only healthier, lower in fat and higher in fiber. No guilt included. There is a wide range of alternatives from different manufacturers. Unfortunately, with a closer look, they often turn out to be copies of "unhealthy" potato chips. With just as much salt, fat, sugar, and sometimes even flavor enhancers.

Sure, you can still eat them from time to time. But making sweet potato chips yourself is not as complicated as you might think. However, you need to consider some points if you want crispy sweet potato chips from the oven and no slack orange slices… Trust me, I know this because of some painful experiences 😉.

In the past few years, I have noticed that many roads lead to the goal. Some swear that baking sweet potato chips at a very high temperature for a short time is the best way and others rather dry or dehydrate them at a low temperature.

However, if you do a little research on the internet, you'll notice that both recipe alternatives can be pretty unsuccessful. It seems to depend on other factors, such as the quality of the sweet potato, whether the chips turn out crispy. How ripe is the potato, how thick are the slices? The most common problem: sweet potato chips don't get crispy.

How to make the Healthy Crispy Sweet Potato Chips

Let's get started with this easy and healthy snack! First of all, wash and dry the sweet potato thoroughly. Leave the skin on and eat with it (theoretically, you can peel the potato).

Now, preheat the oven to 300°F/150°C and cover 2 baking sheets with baking paper (no silicone baking mats!). Cut the sweet potato into very thin, even slices using a slicer or peeler. The finer, the crispier the chips will be. Drizzle or mix slices with oil in a bowl, add salt and additional seasonings if desired. Spread the slices side by side on the baking sheets, they should not overlap.

It's time to bake the slices for about 30-45 minutes, turning once halfway through. The exact time depends on the thickness of the pieces and your oven. Attention: it often goes from golden brown to black very quickly at the end!

The nibble-classic from Mexico just made homemade - and not deep-fried, but in the oven.

In the end, remove the chips from the oven and let them cool/dry for at least 15 minutes. This will make them even crispier.

    Top Tip

It's essential to cut the sweet potatoes into fine, evenly thick (thin) slices! Also, the slices should not overlap on the baking sheet. By the way, the ready-baked sweet potato chips often only become crispy when you allow them to cool for a quarter of an hour or even longer. You can also leave them on the baking sheet until the next day. Waiting just won't work probably - they're just too easy! If you like the recipe, feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices.
