    Taste and Occasion

When I was a kid, I used to put yogurt cups in the freezer and think it would make delicious yogurt ice cream. It didn't, of course. Today I know that an ice cream maker for frozen yogurt works wonders 🙂.

All you need is yogurt, milk, some lemon juice and your sweetener of choice. Below I'll give you tips on how to get the frozen yogurt nice and sweet without sugar. After just over 5 minutes in the ice cream maker (check out my review of the Kitchenaid Ice Cream Maker here), the yogurt is nice and soft, creamy and ready to eat.

The emphasis is on the latter: The frozen yogurt should then be enjoyed soon, as it melts quickly. The fact that so few ingredients can become delicious ice cream so quickly amazed me. Since I first discovered the frozen yogurt recipe years ago, we make it quite frequently because we actually always have yogurt in the fridge.

Well, now the important question: Is frozen yogurt healthy?
It depends. The homemade version from my recipe definitely is, since it only has yogurt, milk and a sweetener of your choice in it. With store-bought frozen yogurt, of course, it can be quite different. Likewise, if you use "unhealthy" toppings.

Of course, I especially like that the frozen yogurt doesn't use egg (in fact, many recipes use raw egg whites) and it's also without sugar. Sweetener for baking is not my cup of tea, but for sweetening desserts I use it from time to time.

You can make it completely sugar-free, for example, with a few dashes of liquid sweetener, but also with powdered erythritol or xylitol. If you prefer alternative sweeteners, use agave syrup, rice syrup or honey. In this case, you should reduce the amount of milk or lemon juice slightly. The frozen yogurt still remains comparatively healthy and low in calories! At least, if you don't overdo it with the toppings - as I did for the pictures 😉

The crowning glory of frozen yogurt is for many the motley decoration of sweets, fruits, cookies and sauces. If you make your own frozen yogurt with an ice cream maker, you may not have the same wide selection as in stores or cafés, but you can be a bit creative ;-).

I prefer to eat my frozen yogurt actually without frills. So go for it with the ice cream maker!

How to make the Sugar Free Frozen Yogurt

The actual preparation of frozen yogurt is very simple: To begin with, mix all ingredients together well in a bowl. No matter what sweetener you use: The unfrozen mass should taste well sweet, as it tastes somewhat less sweet again in "ice cream form".

Now, you need to put the yogurt mixture in the ice cream maker and freeze it, but for a shorter time than regular ice cream. With my Kitchenaid ice cream maker, it only takes about 5 to 10 minutes for the frozen yogurt to be perfect.

    Recipe Recommendation

    2-Ingredient Ice Cream

Super creamy and variable: This 2-ingredient ice cream only needs to stay in the freezer for a few hours - no tedious mixing or stirring required.

Finally, it is time to get creative: Garnish the frozen yogurt with toppings as desired and enjoy it immediately - the ice cream melts quickly. And by the way: You shouldn't freeze frozen yogurt to make it last longer - even though the name is tempting. 😉

    Top Tip

The recipe works with low-fat plain yogurt (not the 0% variety!), as well as with whole milk, cream or Greek yogurt. Only the consistency may vary.

It's great to learn that frozen yogurt can be healthy when paired with healthy fruits. My wife is wanting to go on a diet and she was wondering if she could eat frozen yogurt as part of her diet. I'll tell her that she should eat frozen yogurt with healthy fruits.
